Council moves forward with bylaw to permit backyard hens
Council gave first, second, and third reading to a bylaw to permit the keeping of backyard hens in Sidney under certain conditions. Sidney is currently the only municipality in the Capital Regional District that does not permit backyard hens; the proposed bylaw drew on best practices in the region.
Under the proposed bylaw, only lots with single-family homes that are 550 square metres (5,920 square feet) in size or larger would be permitted to keep backyard hens. There would be a limit of five backyard hens per property. Those planning to keep backyard hens would need to complete an application process with the Town and confirm they could meet parameters around setbacks, hen enclosures, and hen care. The bylaw will be considered for adoption at a future Council meeting.
