Council awards contract to build Beacon Avenue West roundabout

Following a competitive process, Council has approved the awarding of a construction contract to C-1 Excavating Ltd to build a roundabout at Beacon Avenue West and Galaran Road, connecting to a realigned Stirling Way. The roundabout is expected to be completed in late 2023. The infrastructure improvement will increase public safety, reduce congestion, and support economic development in the area.

Project costs will be significantly offset by a recently announced $5 million grant for roundabout construction from the Federal Government’s Strategic Priorities Fund of the Canada Community-Building Fund. Up to $2.6 million in remaining project costs will be split between the three project partners: Town of Sidney, Victoria Airport Authority, and District of North Saanich, according to a funding agreement finalized by in December 2022.

Mayor appeals to Governor of Washington to expedite reinstatement of Sidney-Anacortes ferry

On April 19th, Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith sent a letter urging the Governor of Washington, Jay Inslee, to consider opportunities to reinstate the Sidney-Anacortes ferry service as soon as possible. The note outlines the importance of the ferry service to both the regional economy and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. The letter was drafted with input from W̱SÁNEĆ representatives and includes an accompanying letter from Destination Greater Victoria.

In February 2022, Washington State Ferries shared that the Sidney-Anacortes ferry service will not resume service until 2030 at the earliest due to a vessel shortage. The ferry has not operated since 2019 due to the pandemic and subsequent staffing shortages.
