Council renews agreement with Beacon Community Services for SHOAL Centre

The Town of Sidney will continue to partner with Beacon Community Services on the operation of the SHOAL Centre for Seniors, which serves more than 1,200 community members each year. Council has approved the renewal of a five-year funding agreement with annual contributions from the Town increasing to $100,000 in 2024.

The SHOAL Centre serves as a community hub for people over 55 years old. It is run by Beacon Community Services staff, and supported by a large team of volunteers, whose annual hours add up to the equivalent of 58 full-time jobs. The SHOAL Centre offers a range of services to help people live independently for longer, and create social connections. Services include recreational classes from yoga to woodworking, a meal delivery program run out of the Centre’s commercial kitchen, as well as personal assistance to community members navigating housing, health care, and other potentially complex processes.

The Town has had an agreement in place with Beacon Community Services for the operation of the SHOAL Centre since 2007.
