Council approves predictable annual funding for Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea
The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea will now be able to rely on ongoing annual funding from the Town of Sidney to operate this important community asset. The Centre, which is operated as a non-profit, will receive annual funding equivalent to 1.4% of the Town of Sidney’s tax revenues each year. This percentage is based on the level of lump sum funding the Centre has been receiving over the past several years.
Confirmation of ongoing funding provides a new level of certainty for future planning, and better supports the Centre in its capital fundraising efforts.
The Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea serves as an economic driver for the community, attracting more than one million visitors over the past 15 years. The aquarium also provides educational programming to community members and visitors of all ages, while providing valuable experiences to approximately 150 volunteers.
