On February 26, 2024, Council adopted an amendment to the Animal Control and Licence Bylaw No. 1965 to permit backyard hens in Sidney on eligible properties. Background information on the bylaw amendment can be found in the February 12, 2024 Staff Report to Council.
Some key regulations include the following:
- Residents must apply for and obtain a Hen Keeping Permit from the Town prior to acquiring the chickens ($100 application fee required).
- A maximum of five hens are permitted. No roosters or chicks are permitted.
- Minimum lot size: 550 square metres.
- Minimum setbacks: 3m from side and rear lot lines; 4.5m from any residential door or window.
- The hen enclosure must be maintained in good repair.
