A small new playground has been installed in Brethour Park . In keeping with improvements outlined the Brethour Park Concept Plan (shown below), the playground has been centred in the park’s open green space.
After reviewing several design options and considering feedback from the Saanich Peninsula Accessibility Advisory Committee, Council selected a design option for a playground in Brethour Park that includes a play structure for school-aged children (5 to 12 years old) as well as a play structure for toddlers and pre-school aged children (1.5 to 5 years old).
The playground also has a number of features that support children and caregivers with physical disabilities, including a fully rubberized surface, friendship swing, and a We-Go-Round, which will be the first inclusive merry-go-round of its kind on the Saanich Peninsula.
Funding for the playground has been partially offset by Kal Tire’s Replay Fund, which contributed $20,000 toward the playground’s rubberized surface as well as the Province of BC ($156,000 in funding for the project came from the Growing Communities Fund).
Future phases of park enhancements could include a new multi-sport court, seating area, washrooms, and tree plantings, along with improvements to parking, drainage, and pathways.
