Fire Safety Plan

The Town of Sidney Fire Inspectors are available to assist with the preparation of a Fire Safety Plan that is specific to your building, as requirements for a Fire Safety Plan vary based on the type occupancy.

The Fire Department encourages you to contact a Fire Inspector for guidance with the process.

As per the BC Fire Code, the following occupancies require a Fire Safety Plan:

  • All buildings required by the BC Building Code to have a Fire Alarm.
  • Areas used for storage of handling hazardous, flammable, or combustible liquids, such as fuel filling stations.
  • Occupancies where hazardous operations are taking place such as hot works, dust production, and spray application.
  • Demolition and construction sites.

The Fire Safety Plan should address the following points:

  • Appointment of fire wardens
  • Confining, controlling, and extinguishing fires
  • Control of fire hazards
  • Documentation of building safety systems
  • Evacuating persons requiring special assistance
  • Holding fire drills
  • Inspection of facilities
  • Instructing occupants on evacuation procedures
  • Maintenance of records
  • Notifying the Fire Department
  • Sounding the fire alarm
  • Training fire wardens
