The Sidney Fire Department provides fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency related services to the Town of Sidney on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis. Although the Department is comprised of career staff, most of the Town’s fire service is provided by our dedicated stipend volunteer members.
As fire fighters our primary goal is to protect the public. This is accomplished in two ways:
- Prevention through fire inspections, fire safety education, and code enforcement programs. The Community Risk Reduction programs are committed to educating neighbourhoods, schools, seniors, businesses, clubs, and any interested residents on a variety of topics. Some of the topics we offer free public education on include fire safety, emergency preparedness, fire extinguisher training, smoke alarms, and child car seat installation.
- Response to emergencies and when public safety is at risk. These include, but are not limited to, fire emergencies, rescuing people and assisting at medical emergencies. The fire department prepares for these scenarios through education, training, pre-incident planning, and operating state-of-the-art equipment.
Individuals over the age of 19 who reside in the catchment area, are in good physical condition, and who have the desire to participate in fire, rescue, and emergency medical activities are invited to apply for stipend volunteer positions with the Sidney Fire Department.
Assisting your community by becoming a stipend volunteer fire fighter provides citizens with valuable services that touch many lives. Participation as a stipend volunteer fire fighter brings immense personal rewards and gives a tremendous sense of accomplishment for a job well done. It also involves working as part of a team under sometimes difficult circumstances.
We value our reputation as an inclusive community and are committed to building a team with a variety of backgrounds, skills, and views. Please feel free to stop by the Community Safety Building and discuss your application with our Deputy Fire Chief and Training Officer, Mike Harman, or email it to the department at firedept@sidney.ca.
